Sevierville Police Department's SWAT team concluded an hours-long standoff at a Kodak hotel early Friday morning, apprehending a man wanted on multiple serious felony warrants. Mark A. Harden, 33, of Kodak, was taken into custody around 3 a.m. after barricading himself inside a room at the Smokies Hotel, located at 184 E. Dumplin Road.
Police were attempting to serve active warrants on Harden from the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, which included charges for aggravated domestic assault, especially aggravated kidnapping, and theft. Upon locating Harden in a hotel room, he refused to exit and instead fortified himself inside.
"Due to the severity of the charges, and the potential that the suspect was armed," the Sevierville Police Department (SPD) activated and deployed its SWAT team, along with crisis negotiators and a police K9 unit, according to information shared by SPD. Crisis negotiators made repeated attempts to communicate with Harden and de-escalate the situation peacefully. However, Harden consistently refused to surrender or cooperate with the officers' commands.
As negotiations failed, SPD SWAT deployed a drone into the barricaded room. The drone's purpose was to locate Harden within the room and to facilitate continued communication efforts. Despite these advanced tactical measures, Harden remained defiant and still refused to surrender.
Following the unsuccessful attempts at peaceful resolution and communication, the SWAT team escalated its tactics. Chemical agents were deployed into the room to compel Harden to exit. Subsequently, a K9 unit was sent into the room to locate the suspect. The K9 successfully found Harden within the room, where he was discovered "hissing under a pile of clothes and mattress."
The SWAT team then moved in and took Harden into custody shortly after the K9's entry, at approximately 3 a.m. Following his apprehension, Harden was treated at the scene for minor injuries, which included a dog bite sustained during his capture. He was then transported to a local hospital for further medical evaluation and treatment.
Later on Friday morning, Harden was booked into the Sevier County Jail. His booking was in connection with the outstanding warrants from the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office. Additional information regarding the specifics of those warrants was not immediately made available by authorities. The Sevierville Police Department also indicated that more charges related to the events of the standoff may be pending as the investigation continues.
