Great Smoky Mountains National Park has announced upcoming temporary closures for Kuwohi Road and the trail leading to Kuwohi Observation Tower. These closures are scheduled for the mornings of Thursday, September 10, and Tuesday, September 15. The purpose of these temporary restrictions is to facilitate special educational programs designed for students attending schools in Swain County and the Qualla Boundary.

During each scheduled closure period, the park will close Kuwohi Road and its associated parking lot starting at 8 p.m. the night before the respective event. Access will be restored, and the road and parking lot will reopen by 2 p.m. on each of the specified closure days. Visitors are advised that the entire 7-mile roadway will be inaccessible to all forms of traffic, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists, during these designated closure times. Park officials urge visitors planning to explore the area to consider alternative destinations and to ensure their vehicles are not present in the parking lot when the road closure takes effect.

These organized closures are in support of Kuwohi Connection Days, a cultural initiative developed in collaboration with The Center for Native Health and various other community organizations. The programs are structured to provide students with a unique opportunity to visit Kuwohi and engage directly with its profound historical, spiritual, and cultural significance. A key component of these visits involves interactions with Cherokee elders, language speakers, culture bearers, and other community members. These individuals will share traditional stories and teachings that convey deep insights about Kuwohi and the heritage of the Cherokee people.

For those seeking scenic mountain views within the national park or the broader Tennessee Valley during these closure times, several alternatives remain available. Look Rock Tower, situated on the Foothills Parkway in Tennessee, offers expansive vistas of the national park. Additionally, Newfound Gap Overlook, which provides views encompassing both the North Carolina and Tennessee mountains, will continue to operate without interruption. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park advises all potential visitors to regularly check the park website for current alerts, which include updated information on any road and trail closures. This ensures visitors have the latest information for planning their trips and selecting appropriate destinations within the park. The announcement of these closures was made by Great Smoky Mountains National Park on September 3, 2026.
