GATLINBURG, Tenn. — Great Smoky Mountains National Park has announced upcoming temporary closures on sections of Little River Road in mid-September to facilitate essential road maintenance. The closures will affect the stretch of road between the Townsend Wye and Elkmont on two separate days, September 15 and September 17, both scheduled from 7 a.m. to noon.
On Monday, September 15, the park will close Little River Road from the Townsend Wye to the Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area. During this period, visitors traveling between Townsend and Line Springs Road can utilize Wears Valley Road (US 321) as a detour route. This segment of the closure will ensure park staff can safely conduct necessary work on the roadway.
The second closure will take place on Wednesday, September 17, impacting Little River Road from Metcalf Bottoms to Elkmont Junction. For those needing to travel in this area, Wears Valley Road between Line Springs Road and Pigeon Forge is designated as the alternative detour. Both closures are set for morning hours, concluding by noon to minimize disruption.
Despite these temporary closures, several popular destinations within Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including Elkmont, Metcalf Bottoms, and Cades Cove, will remain accessible to the public. However, visitors planning to reach these sites should be prepared for potential detours and anticipate increased travel times as a result of the maintenance activities.
The park also highlighted specific vehicle restrictions that will be in effect. Motor homes, buses, and vans exceeding 25 feet in length are prohibited on Wear Cove Gap Road. Additionally, any passenger vehicles towing a trailer are also restricted from this segment of road, specifically from the park boundary up to and including the Metcalf Bottoms bridge. This restriction aims to ensure safety and manage traffic flow on the designated detour routes.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park first implemented temporary closures of Little River Road in 2024 as part of its ongoing efforts to safely complete essential road maintenance across the park's infrastructure. These short-duration closures, which typically total less than ten hours for each maintenance period, allow park staff to address critical upkeep tasks efficiently.
The work typically carried out during these temporary closures is comprehensive. Park staff routinely perform mowing and trimming along approximately 24 miles of roadsides to maintain clear sightlines and prevent vegetation overgrowth. Furthermore, they address structural integrity by repairing an average of 27 damaged road shoulder areas, which is crucial for preventing further erosion and ensuring the safety of drivers.
These proactive measures are part of the park's commitment to preserving its roadways and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors. The essential road maintenance helps to prolong the life of the roads and prevent more extensive, long-term closures in the future. The news release for these closures was issued by Great Smoky Mountains National Park on September 11, 2026.
Visitors are strongly advised to check the Great Smoky Mountains National Park website for the most current and up-to-date information regarding road closures and any ongoing construction projects before planning their visit. This will help ensure smooth travel and minimize unexpected delays during their time in the Tennessee Smokies region.
