Great Smoky Mountains National Park has announced temporary closures for sections of Little River Road in mid-September to facilitate essential road maintenance. The closures are slated for September 15 and 17, 2026, with specific segments of the scenic route affected on each day. Park officials state that these operations are crucial for maintaining the safety and condition of the popular roadway for visitors.

On Monday, September 15, a segment of Little River Road will be closed from the Townsend Wye to the Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area. This initial closure will be in effect from 7 a.m. to noon. Visitors planning travel during these hours between Townsend and Line Springs Road are advised to use Wears Valley Road (US 321) as a designated alternative route to navigate the area.

Two days later, on Wednesday, September 17, a different section of Little River Road will experience a closure. This second segment will extend from Metcalf Bottoms to the Elkmont Junction, also from 7 a.m. to noon. For this specific closure, visitors should plan to utilize Wears Valley Road as a detour option between Line Springs Road and Pigeon Forge to bypass the closed section.

Park officials emphasized that popular destinations within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including Elkmont, Metcalf Bottoms, and Cades Cove, will remain accessible during these maintenance periods. However, those planning to visit these sites should anticipate potential detours and prepare for increased travel time. The park advises all visitors to factor these adjustments into their itineraries for September 15 and 17 to ensure a smooth trip.

Specific vehicle restrictions will also be enforced during these maintenance operations. Motor homes, buses, and vans that exceed 25 feet in length are prohibited on Wear Cove Gap Road. This prohibition also extends to any passenger vehicles that are towing a trailer. The restriction applies from the park boundary up to and including the Metcalf Bottoms bridge, encompassing a critical section of the route.

These upcoming closures on Little River Road are part of an ongoing maintenance strategy implemented by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park first began conducting temporary closures on this road in 2024 to safely carry out vital road upkeep. These short-duration closures, which typically total less than 10 hours, allow park staff to complete a range of necessary tasks effectively.

The maintenance work commonly conducted during these brief windows includes mowing and trimming approximately 24 miles along roadsides to improve visibility and reduce fire hazards. Additionally, staff repair about 27 damaged road shoulder areas, addressing erosion and structural issues that could impact driving safety. These efforts collectively contribute to the overall safety and structural integrity of the roadway.

Visitors are encouraged to check for up-to-date information regarding road closures and construction directly from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to ensure they have the most current travel details before heading into the park.
